But, contrary to what we learned from Friends, peeing on a jellyfish sting will only make it worse. If you do encounter a jellyfish, the best thing to do is just wash the sting out with fresh water.
Further north, in Laguna Beach, we had an up close and personal encounter with a tarball (yes, just like the ones that washed up on the gulf a few years ago) and learned firsthand just how sticky they can be! Tarballs are actually pretty common in Southern California due to natural oil seeps. They look like small, black toasted marshmallows, complete with the gooey center.
If you happen to unknowingly step on a tarball (yes, it is as gross as it sounds), take an ice cube from your cooler and apply it to the tar until it has hardened, then you should be able to easily scrap it off. Or you can panic, find the nearest Target, and buy every household cleaner you can think of that might take it off (yes, that's what we did and Goo Gone definitely works the best).
