Part 2 of 2 on our travels in Italy's Lake Como district. Read Part 1 here.

So we found ourselves in Varenna, and we were definitely enjoying all that the lakeside town had to offer; however, there was still more of Lake Como to explore. We knew that Bellagio seemed to be the place to go when on the lake, so for a little less than $6—about €4.60—we hopped the ferry for a ride across the lake.

Gestione Governativa Navigazione Laghi runs the frequent service, and they’ve got things down to a science. Cars roll off and on the boats with regular service, and all the tourists follow right after for a quick trip across the lake. Just be sure to double check the schedule, or you might be visiting a different town—not that that’s a bad thing!

The ride across the lake was probably one of the best aspects of visiting Lake Como because it allowed for great views of both Varenna and Bellagio right from the waterfront. It probably didn’t hurt that we had pretty much perfect weather as well. Even if you didn’t have time to walk around and explore the different towns and villages surrounding the lake, it might be worth it to just take a roundtrip ride to get a few snapshots to show off back at the office.

Upon arrival at Bellagio, it’s pretty clear that this is where everyone heads when they’re checking out Lake Como. Not that Varenna is a sleepy or a secret destination, but it was certainly a little less crowded than its sister city across the water. We took our time perusing the local shops and restaurants while navigating the alleys and lanes, and navigating our way up the steep steps away from the waterfront. Of course there was one—or maybe two—stops for gelato.

Back towards the water there are plenty of cafes and restaurants eager to take your money in exchange for a seat with a view. We took our time taking in the scene and stopping for a little bit of an afternoon aperitif while dodging pigeons and other feathered intruders.

Just lake Varenna we’d have to say that visiting Bellagio is something to definitely add to your travel bucket list and, if you’re heading to or through Milan it’s definitely worth the day trip. We backtracked to Varenna and took the train back to Milan, but there is the option to continue your ferry travel over to the town of Como as well. There’s transportation to other Italian cities as well from there, so you’re able to kind of make a big circle and check out at least three different towns. We’ll save that for next time.
