Upon arrival at Bellagio, it’s pretty clear that this is where everyone heads when they’re checking out Lake Como. Not that Varenna is a sleepy or a secret destination, but it was certainly a little less crowded than its sister city across the water. We took our time perusing the local shops and restaurants while navigating the alleys and lanes, and navigating our way up the steep steps away from the waterfront. Of course there was one—or maybe two—stops for gelato.
Back towards the water there are plenty of cafes and restaurants eager to take your money in exchange for a seat with a view. We took our time taking in the scene and stopping for a little bit of an afternoon aperitif while dodging pigeons and other feathered intruders.
Just lake Varenna we’d have to say that visiting Bellagio is something to definitely add to your travel bucket list and, if you’re heading to or through Milan it’s definitely worth the day trip. We backtracked to Varenna and took the train back to Milan, but there is the option to continue your ferry travel over to the town of Como as well. There’s transportation to other Italian cities as well from there, so you’re able to kind of make a big circle and check out at least three different towns. We’ll save that for next time.
