The Trevi Fountain is famous for travel snapshots and eating up your foreign change, but now it’s in the news for something else. It sounds like the fountain has started to crumble, and that’s clearly not a good thing. Several pieces have already fallen off, and that’s kind of creating quite a stir regarding whether now might be a good time to schedule some kind of major revamp and renovation—we’d think so.

Some city officials kind of brushed off the damage, chalking it up to the unusually cold winter in the Eternal City. The spring then saw certain parts of the fountain blocked off while the experts checked things out, but summer sees the fountain once again open for business. Naturally the locals are concerned that some monuments and attractions need a little more attention than they’re currently receiving, so we’ll see if the public outcry will lead to a full-blown refresh and restoration.

Of course we tossed a coin into the fountain on our visit to ensure our return—or at least that’s how it goes. We just hope that most of the fountain is there as well the next time we stroll through the area.
