Nice Melons! Three June Watermelon Festivals to Hit
Nice Melons! That’s exactly what you’ll be saying later this month, as the season for watermelon food festivals is now upon us. Sure there’s plenty of fleshy fruit available all year long, but June seems to be one of the best times to participate in some seed spitting. Here’s just three picks for watermelon wonder this month:
Hampton County Watermelon Festival – Hampton County, South Carolina
South Carolina’s oldest continuing festival celebrates its 70th year this month, as locals roll the watermelons toward the fairgrounds between June 16 and June 24. There’s golf tournaments, photo contests, crafts, and of course everything has a little bit of a watermelon theme. In addition to a watermelon eating contests—and free watermelon slices—there’s also a line on the schedule known simply as “melon judging.” Just be sure to hold back on the seed spitting when royalty is present, as you know that the Watermelon Festival Queen will be making an appearance during the festival.
Watermelon Thump – Luling, Texas
Over in Texas the watermelon festival with the best name—The Thump—takes place between June 21 and June 24. Tickets will run you between $5 and $10 during certain points of the festival, but there’s plenty of chances to get in for free on June 21 and June 24 as well as on Saturday until 1pm. Seed spitting will be one of the festival’s highlights, and it should be as the town hold’s the current world record. It was set back in 1989 with a launch of almost 70-feet. Parades, live music, eating contests, and car shows will round out the weekend’s entertainment. The Thump has been doing its thing since the 1950s, so if you love some watermelon you won’t be disappointed.
Beauregard Watermelon Festival – DeRidder, Louisiana
Kind of like half way between Houston and New Orleans sits Beauregard Parish, and in just a few more weeks it’ll be officially known as watermelon country. It’s the seventh year for the festival and its fruit related events, and this one looks to be the best yet. Admission will set you back $5, but if you head to the opening ceremony you’ll get plenty of watermelon to enjoy included with your ticket. Seed spitting, live music, watermelon eating contests, and even a talent show—Watermelon Idol—will all be yours to enjoy on June 28, 29 and 30.
