Atlanta Airport's Brand New International Terminal is Already Causing Trouble

We were all excited about the new shopping and dining options as well as the new airport smell that recently arrived at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, but it already looks like there’s something to complain about. In case you missed it the airport just cut the ribbon on a brandy new international terminal—Concourse F.

You’d think that airport officials would have focused plenty of attention and planning on the new terminal’s ability to process plenty of international arrivals and departures in a quick and efficient manner. After all, that’s what it’s there for. Well unfortunately that doesn’t seem to be the case, as there are already plenty of complaints about the new building's lack of efficiency for those passengers arriving from around the globe.

It sounds like lots of the problems are based on passengers who parked at the main terminal before the new international option was open, and the 14-passenger shuttles aren’t cutting it when it comes to demand. The shuttles are supposed to whisk passengers away to their vehicles and over to MARTA—Atlanta’s public transportation—but it’s taking just too darn long. The airport promises to add bigger busses and more frequent options, but MARTA isn’t getting any closer—it didn’t get extended to arrive or depart from the new terminal.

There are plenty of people that are singing the praises of the airport, so it’s not all negative. Those who are just connecting through the airport will be happy to know that they won’t have to travel too far to recollect their baggage after arriving and clearing customs. That used to be quite a pain in the neck to deal with after landing following an eight or nine hour flight.

For now it sounds like people are just getting used to the new systems and processes, but of course we’ll give you our opinion as soon as we can get down there.

ATL Forgotten

As an Atlanta resident who just went through this terminal, I can say that I am appalled at the lack of thought and planning given to passengers with Atlanta as their final destination. My flight from Rome gated in Concourse E (even though Concourse F is open and functioning). I then proceeded to walk the length of Concourse E, carrying all my heavy duty-free liquor bottles, passed the old customs area (where those with connecting flights are allowed to go), rode down an elevator that takes you underground (gives new meaning to "Underground Atlanta"), walk underground the entire length of the distance between E and F Concourses--where there are representatives stationed along the walk cheering you on after your 10 hour flight, yelling things like, "you're half way, almost there;" I thought I was running the Atlanta Peachtree Road Race--and then you finally arrive at customs. After customs, you're put out into the heat of Hotlanta, where you (along with hundreds of other people from your same international flight and others) wait for 14-passenger vans that arrive every 20 minutes. After waiting for half an hour for a seat in the tiny vans and barely moving in line, we jumped to the shorter rental car line--also served by 14-passenger vans, but much shorter at that time--and made it to the rental car station, and we then took the rental car tram to the main terminal so that we could get on MARTA...2 hours later. So much for Delta's hometown spirit--those wanting to deplane international flights with the final destination of Atlanta were forgotten in this terminal design.
