This German Luggage Company Has Their Own Airplane

There we were, just minding our own business, walking along the famous Hohenzollernbrücke that spans the Rhein River in Köln (Cologne), Germany. There was a noise like a low-flying airplane engine…but distinctly not a jet engine. What kind of prop plane would be flying over Köln on a cloudless day?

Naturally with any sort of airplane noise above, we looked up. With the sun glinting off its silver wings, a vintage aircraft buzzed the crowds out along the river enjoying the holiday weekend and pure blue skies.

In New York, this would be prime time for a biplane pulling a long ad banner. In Germany, it's something like this, which we noticed was indeed an ad—for Rimowa luggage. The underside of the wings sport both the Rimowa logo and trademark phrase: Die Koffer mit den Rillen (the luggage with the ribs).

With some Googling, we've discovered that the airplane is a 1949 Junkers JU-52, a German-made trimotor and is, as expected, an aircraft of huge importance in the history of aviation. Enjoy our shots while we try to process the fact that we caught it and managed to get our camera out in time.
