Sounds Like American Airlines Could Be Open to That US Airways Merger After All

All right, we’ll admit that we don’t exactly know what’s going on with US Airways and American Airlines. It seems like one day the two airlines are all hot and heavy for one another, and the next day the relationship has turned a tad cold and sour. This week, the two airline lovers have been talking and texting once again, and American Airlines may be interested in continuing this type of relationship.

Late last week American Airlines said that they would consider merger opportunities with the friendly folks over at US Airways. This is kind of the first time they’ve admitted it, so we’ll see how things shake out moving forward.

Right now American Airlines is enjoying some special rights after filling for bankruptcy protection, meaning that other companies—and carriers—can’t bother them until they get all their ducks in a row. That type of protection ends later this year, at which time we wouldn’t be surprised to see US Airways get a little more aggressive towards making the two become one.

For now the carriers remain totally separate. Obviously Uncle Sam and his regulatory buddies would have to approve any planned merger or purchase, so there’s still plenty of factors that could mess up any future airline wedding plans. You know we’ll keep you up to date, but, even if things move quickly, we wouldn’t expect any changes as far as operations or passengers are concerned until next year at the very earliest.
