Korean Air is the most recent airline to go the new way of skies. The airline has moved from a weight limit for bags that go in the belly, to a per piece limit. The piece system is based on the class of service and does carry an increased weight restriction. But when its all said and done, even an economy passenger gets about 6.5 more pounds to pack more souvenirs.
Recently, Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, and Swiss Air have all gone the way of the "piece system." They will pay more attention to the number of bags versus the tip of the scales and allow their passengers to pack a bit heavier.
Qantas and Virgin Australia have also moved away from the weight one passenger can put in the belly and instead moved to a per piece system depending on class of service and tier in frequent flyer program. Most passengers are seeing either an additional bag or about 3 kg more per bag.
As a whole, a little more leniency with weighing of bags or even more freedom to spread your belonging over a few bags makes traveling a lot more pleasurable. While we are very happy with these new trends, we still think the best way to travel is carry-on only.
