Three Zoos for Visiting Baby Sumatran Tiger Cubs

April 30, 2012 at 3:45 PM | by | Comments (0)

Sumatran tigers are a critically endangered subspecies of tiger from the Indonesian island of Sumatra. There are less than 300 of them left in the wild, and all known population clusters are in decline. So when you have a chance to see one under any circumstances you should avail yourself of the opportunity. And if that chance somehow involves seeing a bunch of baby Sumatran cubs wrestling, that should conclusively settle whether it's worth your time to go wandering around the zoo for an afternoon.

This is all by way of saying that we realize it's been almost a month since we posted about zoos, and we owe you some cute things. Herein are three different parks across two different states, each with a pair of baby Sumatran tigers. We've even included embedded videos and links to picture galleries, because it's Monday and you deserve it.

First is our beloved San Diego Safari Park, which is the sister facility of our beloved San Diego Zoo. Last March the Safari Park added to its surfeit of cute baby elephants with the birth of cute baby tigers. Reports are that the two cubs are so small and adorable that they can't even stand up yet, and so the two are still obviously off exhibit. The facility is trying to build a new home for tigers, so expect to be hearing a lot more about them soon.

If you want to see cubs old enough to be on exhibit—and you do—you can head north of San Diego to the Los Angeles Zoo. On top of launching their new reptile house, zookeepers have also been tending to a pair of Sumatran cubs born last August. The two are playing in the zoo's wonderful tiger facility—a huge pit that's fantastically easy for guests to access and look into—and are "having fun...playing in the pond [and] running around with mom."

Finally there's the Cameron Park Zoo in Texas. Its pair of cubs, Indah and Bugara, are slightly younger than the Los Angeles babies. There's more information about them on the zoo's Tiger Cub Watch page, and there are Zooborns picture galleries charting their month-by-month growth here and here and here.

Finally, as promised, videos! The San Diego Safari Park: video platformvideo managementvideo solutionsvideo player
