Beauty on the Go: What's Inside Our Cosmetics Case

Let's talk a bit about one of the biggest travel mysteries: how to get all your crap into a single bag. Here, makeup expert, fashion writer and frequent traveler Lilit M. shares what cosmetics have made the final edit to reach her travel makeup case:

I have one general rule about makeup. The answer must be "yes" to the question, "can I put it on in an airplane bathroom?" Passing that test, a product is permanently welcomed into my arsenal. Even when I'm not traveling, I appreciate beauty products that are efficient, multipurpose, and easy to use. So what's in my bag? Here's the breakdown:

· The bag. Mine's from MUJI. It's lightweight, has several compartments and a handle that makes it easy to transport. Most importantly, it's machine-washable.

· Lipstick. Even if I skip all other makeup, a little bit of lipstick makes me feel and look more awake. I carry two: a more casual lip stain from Clinique for every day, and a rich cream lipstick from Tom Ford for more formal occasions, like business meetings or dinners out.

· Eyeshadow. Cream eyeshadow, unlike its powder equivalent, doesn't require brushes or messy applicators. I just swipe it on with my finger in two seconds flat. These Shiseido eyeshadows are so small and thin that you can bring a few and either mix and match or try a smoky eye.

· Moisturizer Flights dry out your skin, as does the general stress of travel and being in the sun (if you're heading for the beach). A nice combination moisturizer and sunscreen will take up less space while also keeping your epidermis hydrated.

· Lip balm. This round balm from EOS is the ultimate in user-friendly beauty; its cool globelike shape means you can put it on both lips at once. Talk about easy.

· Hand lotion. Did I mention that flights dehydrate people? Because that's critical. I snagged this Bulgari lotion on a Virgin Blue (now Virgin Australia) flight, but your favorite travel-size bottle will do just fine.

· Undereye roller. Since my eyes get puffy when traveling, this cool metal undereye rollerball from First Aid Beauty is a lifesaver. Rather than dealing with concealer or foundation, roll this soothing ball over your undereye bags and you're good to go.

· Mascara. I often skip mascara when traveling in case it irritates my eyes or I don't have a chance to remove it before dealing with glasses and contacts. But Soap and Glory makes a great no-fuss one with a brush you can always keep a grip on in turbulent situations.

· Fragrance. Ever since a disastrous perfume spillage incident in my luggage a few years ago, I've never traveled with a traditional bottle. I use rollerballs or solid perfumes, which are usually smaller and more compact. This one is L'Occitane's Cherry Vanilla, which I love for spring.

What products have made it into your bag? Share in the comments and maybe we'll just have to swing by the drugstore before hitting the airport..
