Inside BMI's Great British Lounge at London-Heathrow Airport

It’s not an airline we’d usually think of flying, but since our recent business class flight to Nice, we’re actively cruising the BMI website for future trips. And that’s in no small part down to the lounge, which, quite simply, is a triumph.

If you’re flying BMI and have lounge access for whatever reason, you have two to choose from: the Star Alliance lounge at Terminal 1 (good toilets but otherwise dreary) and BMI’s Great British Lounge, by gate 5. Don’t make the mistake of hitting the Star Alliance one; the GB Lounge is where it’s at. In fact, it’s so good that it’s probably this Jaunted writer's second favorite lounge after the Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse at LHR Terminal 3. Sure, British Airways' lounges at Terminal 5 are more grandiose, but, small as BMI's is, it ticks the all-important design-focused box.

There’s a seating area as you enter, with high-backed velvet chairs (velvet chairs!) and Union Jack cushions (Union Jack cushions!). That’s where you check in. Past that, you enter an eating area with tables, then hit the food—either laid out in the circular area or keeping toasty on the Aga (there is an Aga!!!). There are newspapers and magazines aplenty by this space.

For food, we’ve only hit the lounge at breakfast hour. Each time (around 7.30am) there was fruit, yoghurt, porridge, pastries and mini pancakes. Then, at about 8am, they add bacon and egg rolls to the mix. We can only imagine what comes out when the brunch hour strikes.

After the foodie bits, there’s an area of sofas sat round a fireplace, with a TV. Then there's the bar, which looks as impressive as any real bar; more seating by the bar, and then the best part—a whole load of armchairs overlooking the runway. Even better, each armchair has a power plug. What more could you want? Oh, yeah. Daybeds.

Well, the toilets could be nicer—the ladies' stalls are a couple of open cubicles, when we all know the best airport lounge toilets are ones that enclose you in a private little room to yourself.

But hey, we’ll live with that. It’s hard to get things perfect, unless, you know...you’re a Virgin Clubhouse.
