Flights over the Pacific will be tapping your pockets just a bit more. In response to a carbon tax in Australia and carbon trading schemes in Europe, Qantas has announced their fares will creap up in the near future. Do not fret, as there is still time to enjoy some world-class beaches and pet a koala or kangaroo before the change.

The red roo has announced an increase of no more than 24% in fuel surcharges for international and domestic flights. International itineraries increase by flat rate, while the domestic charge depends on the length of the flight. Unfortunately, with the high cost of jet fuel and taxes, Qantas is not alone in airfare hikes.

Let's talk actual dollar amounts. Flights on Qantas from LA or Dallas will cost about $130 more in surcharges, taking the total extra fee to $310. From Australia to Asia or Hawaii, it will set you back $20 more to total $165. If you are planning on using the flying kangaroo for an around-the-world trip, be prepared to dig deep as surcharges to Europe will be the most expensive at $350.

Internal flights get a little more reprieve, but are still hit. Short distances, like under 434 miles, will see a 1.82 AUD increase. The largest price increase is just under $7 for longer flights like trans-cons. Just bear in mind that this is per segment, not one way.

New charges will take effect February 15 for flights taking off after June 30th.
