The $1 Steak Dinner of LaGuardia Airport

Sbarro. Starbucks. Cheeburger Cheeburger. These are the words we now associate with airport dining, if "dining" is even the word you can use for a $5 slice of reheated pepperoni pizza.

It wasn't always like this, of course; proof comes from this 1941 menu from New York-LaGuardia's Coffee Shop which, amongst yumminess like roast chicken with currant jelly and pear tarte bourdaloue (whatever that is), features a $1 steak dinner. For $1.25 you could even add an appetizer, salad and dessert.

Watch any old movie, especially one taking place in New York City, and there'll likely be some mention of "going out for a steak dinner." Steak dinners signified occasions, and surely in 1941 flying on an airplane was an occasion that called for a steak dinner. [Sidenote: By 1953, the going rate for a steak dinner with trimmings went up to $1.95].

These scans of the LaGuardia menu were published online today by the New York Public Library and picked up by Gothamist, who instead flipped out over the offering of a Peanut Butter & Bacon sandwich.

Let's start the chant of "BRING IT BACK" now, hm? Just wait til you see the cocktail list!
