Giddy Up for the Melbourne Cup!
Dust off your fascinator or air out your seersucker suit, because it's Melbourne Cup time! The most prestigious horse race in Australia is just around the corner and this one is big. It's so big that Victoria, the state that hosts the cup, gets a public holiday to enjoy the races and maybe place a few bets.
In its 152 years, the Emirates Melbourne Cup has maintained its status as the Aussie horse race with most spectators, highest prize winnings, and most outrageous hats. Not everyone has their binoculars on the thoroughbreds; just like it's Kentucky counterpart, this is the event to see and be seen in your best spring fashion.
Either way, all eyes will be on Flemington Racecourse on November 6th when the grounds become the center of the universe for horses. Dressed to the nines, the crowds clench their bet tickets for one of the tensest three minutes in the sport. In fact the event is often referred to as the "race that stops the nation" because, in 2000, the equivalent of 80% of Australians placed some sort of bet to get a chance at the big money.
Keep in mind this will not compete with the US Presidential election because of a little thing called the International Dateline, so you can still make it back for that election party.
