Peek at Greenland's Remotest Parts via the London Film Festival

One of the most buzzed about films at this year's London Film Festival is about a community a world away from the glitz of red carpet galas and premiere parties.

The documentary The Village At The End Of The World by British filmmaker Sarah Gavron focuses on Niaqornat, a remote hamlet on the north-western coast of Greenland. In a community where the people are outnumbered by dogs it can be difficult to survive in the midst of globalization, let alone climate change.

The film mostly follows Lars, a teen who spends his days on Facebook and dreams of going to New York, the huntsman Karl, the elder Annie, and newcomer Ilanngauq, who moved to Niaqornat after meeting his wife online. "We'd seen lots of nature documentaries but we hadn't seen the human story," says Gavron. "The community fights to stay alive."

As you can imagine, Niaqornat isn't exactly a tourism hotspot but the film is sure to spark some interest in the region. For those who will see The Village At The End Of The World and decide they have to go to Greenland, there are several tour companies that offer expeditions throughout Greenland now, including Luxury Adventures.
