Now You Can Grab a Crab at Miami International Airport

First it was Crocs, now it's crabs. Yep, if we were playing Jeopardy, the answer is: What are last-minute purchases you can make at Miami International Airport?

Crabs is no euphemism either, folks. We're talking stone crabs. Those delicious big claws that you can only get in South Florida between October and May. Only now you don't have to hit up the famous joints like Joe's Stone Crab in South Beach to get your claw on. The opening of The Shoppes at Ocean Drive in Terminal D means you can now grab a crab on the way to your gate.

This sprawling, all-purpose store—essentially a glorified NewsLink outlet—sells claws from George Stone Crab, which also takes online orders and ships its crabs all over the U.S. and Canada.

What to look for when hunting stone crab at MIA

We stopped in at the new Shoppes of Ocean Drive last week and while it's certainly filled to the brim with souvenirs, clothing, candy, books and magazines—plus Miami Heat, Dolphins and Marlins gear and signed memorabilia—the stone crabs were by far the most exciting and unique item for sale.

They're part of the Prive Gourmet Market section of the 'Shoppes' (can't we retire this word already??), and sit alongside jars of caviar and other delicious fishy things.

We didn't grab any crabs (this time) but asked a staff member about them and he told us that they are not frozen but packed fresh daily in special styrofoam packaging that will keep your stone crabs cool for up to 48 hours. Just the thing to break out when the flight attendants try flogging their dry $10 sandwiches in coach!

Prices depend on claw size and weight, but start at around $24.95 a pound for medium claws.

Where to Find Them: Gate D17 in the American Airlines North Terminal of MIA.
