We Asked, They Answered: What is the Shade of KLM's Signature Blue?

A round of applause for KLM. Yesterday, in a huge social media experiment, they repurposed one of their aircraft hangars as a "Live Reply" space, where a mass of KLM crew responded to tweets from the public by holding up massive letter cards to spell out answers, a la football stadium fan cheers.

Naturally we tried to get in on it, but our question obviously demanded a more technical reply than flight attendants, pilots and ground crew can mime. Here was the question:

@Jaunted: So, @KLM Live Reply, is there a name for the particular color of @KLM blue?

And their reply came earlier today:

@KLM: Hello Jaunted, KLM has its own shade of blue, named… KLM Blue! The RGB colour code is 0-161-222. Have a nice day :-)

Now we know. Now you all know! Now some #avgeeks go print shirts with a swatch of RGB 0-161-222 on it. It's not as jazzy a name as we were hoping for—our hearts were set on it being something like "Cool Hand Fluke"—but we'll take it.

Now for a quick quiz: name all the current airlines you can think of where the color blue is part of their thing.

We came up with KLM, JetBlue, Korean Air, Azul, LAN and Air Transat (although we're likely missing some more). Note that each airline has its own hue of blue, however. It's for branding of course, but it's also nice to be able to quickly spot the difference between an arriving KLM flight and an arriving Korean Air flight, because the colors of their liveries are so trademark.

Thanks for the info, KLM!
