ANA's Very First Boeing 787 Finally Rolled Out of the Hangar Over the Weekend

It feels like we’ve been following this for way too long—and we probably have been due to the numerous delays—but we’re finally just about there. Over the weekend the very first Boeing 787 Dreamliner officially rolled off the assembly line and out of the hangar in advance of a delivery to the eager pilots, officials, and crew over at All Nippon Airways.

Federal certification of the new airplane is still on track, but the weekend’s rollout sounds like Boeing has pretty much confirmed that every bit, piece, screw, and bolt is exactly where it should be. The second plane is getting pretty close to being delivered as well, as Boeing officials are thinking that second 787 will be delivered “shortly” after the first.

Some of the airplane’s secrets have been revealed, including how ANA partnered with Boeing to customize things to their liking on the brand new bird. We’ve detailed some of the standard features aboard the 787—like improved cabin lighting, cabin pressurization, and auto-dimming window shades—but there’s even more stuff hidden inside.

Some of our favorite features have to include the multi-function bidets in the bathrooms, cup holders next to the tray tables, and seats that don’t recline into the passenger sitting behind you. We’re also impressed by the little lights that will alert flight attendants that your tray table and seat are in the upright and locked position.

As we said last week, the very first flights are going to be domestic only, which means this very first plane has about 12 business class seats in the front with 252 seats in the back. ANA plans to change things up to include more seats up front when the flights get longer, but for now, this is how things stand. Sights are still very much set on a first flight this fall, so we’ll be sure to let you know when those packages are available for sale—along with pricing!
