What's the Deal with Delta's New LivingSocial Deals?

Flying can be expensive, so it’s nice to know that at least one airline is looking out for your wallet upon landing. Delta is teaming up with LivingSocial—the group buying site competitor to Groupon—to offer up some savings once you arrive at your final destination.

After you’ve booked your flight head over to the “My Trips” section of the site, where there should now be a new option available besides the traditional opportunities to give more money to Delta through hotel and rental car reservations. At the bottom there’s now a chance to sign up for LivingSocial deals, and if you’re not familiar with this kind of group buying program, basically it allows a whole bunch of people to buy the same coupon at extreme savings. That means getting a $50 restaurant gift certificate for like $25 or less, or finding a snorkel excursion that usually goes for $100 to be as little as $50.

Sure it’s another chance for Delta to make some money as well as for LivingSocial to collect a few thousand more email addresses, but there is one feature that we think is clever.

Delta knows where you’re going to be and when, so if you’re headed to Orlando you’ll only get Orlando deals delivered to you for the days you’ll be in town. That saves some space in the inbox, and it also doesn’t cause any jealously when you discover that the place you went before hitting the airport is now offering a pretty fat discount—damn you Chef Mickey’s!

As far as we can tell Delta is the only airline to be partnering up to offer a more permanent deal partnership, but we bet someone over at United or American Airlines is on a conference call right now with Groupon and IT trying to bring it to their airline as well.
