Don't Wish You Were Here: Copenhagen's Assistens Cemetery

Where: Nørrebro, Copenhagen, Denmark

What do Hans Christian Andersen, Søren Kierkegaard, and Nobel Prize winning scientist Niels Bohr have in common? They've all taken up a final resting place at Copenhagen's Assistens Cemetery, a lush and serene plot of land in the city's Nørrebro neighborhood. Thanatourists among you will, without a doubt, appreciate the cultural significancy of a visit to Assistens, but even those who lack interest in the great beyond will find solace in its green and leafy surroundings.

Located directly across the street from Jægersborggade, our favorite little shopping street in Copenhagen, Assistens is quietly trafficked by families, runners, cyclers, and, of course, out-of-towners searching for the headstone of The Little Mermaid's famed author.

As you can gather from the pictures in this post, Assistens is far from imposing or ominous in ambiance. Rather, it's hushed, well-manicured, and the perfect place to spend time resting and/or reading after having gone boutique hopping on Jægersborggade, Coffee Collective latte in-hand. We originally considered filing this post under "Wish You Were Here," but, knock on wood, we wouldn't hope that for any of you, dear readers.
