Qantas' Techie 'Q-Tags' Get Their Own Airport Pop-Up Shops

Where: Australia

A couple months ago we were talking about the Qantas Q Bag Tags, and how they were like pretty much the coolest things ever. If you recall, the bag tags are the next big thing at the airport—at least as far as we’re concerned—as they replace the traditional checked baggage label in favor of something a little bit smarter. These bag tags know where your bag is, who it belongs to, and where it’s ultimately supposed to arrive. Right now the fun is limited to Australia, but we can always hope that these suckers arrive overseas—or at least another airline licenses the technology.

Originally Q-Tags were available only to frequent fliers and those willing to part with around $50 through a purchase on Qantas’ website, but it now looks like these things are literally popping up at the airport thanks to some new pop-up shops.

There's a new store is in the Sydney Qantas Club in Terminal 3, and it'll be open through August to share this travel tech with the masses, and of course to sell some of these tags to curious passengers. Eventually the store will make its way to Melbourne in September and October, and after that it’ll do its thing in Brisbane to round out the end of 2011. The best part of the stores is that they’ll be having a sale, where Qantas Club members can get a buy-one-get-one deal on the tags. Not too shabby, since as we said earlier they’re usually like $50 or so.

These little slices of RFID technology are also coming to airport vending machines at airports across Australia too, so if you’re headed down under be sure to keep your eyes out for a chance to score one. Oh, and if you want to get us something for the holidays, now you know at least one thing on our list.
