Chicago, which used to be summer festival central, has taken some big hits lately, with a number of popular fests axed due to budget constraints. The city has had to say goodbye to the Chicago Outdoor Film Festival, the city's Fourth of July fireworks (Navy Pier gets the honors this year) and Gospel Fest, among others. Luckily, the standout summer soiree, Taste of Chicago, will go on—it opens tomorrow.

Those who miss the canceled fests will especially want to visit the Taste, since it is incorporating Viva! Chicago Latin Music, Country Music, Gospel and Celtic fests into the musical offerings.

Aside from seeing headliners Soul Asylum, the Lemonheads and Natalie Cole, the Taste is all about the food. The popular pigout will feature eats from 59 restaurants, so get ready to loosen that belt. The idea is that you can get small taste-sized portions from various vendors and try a bunch of food.

Vienna Beef will sell the city's favorite hot dogs; Vermillion will serve Indian-Latin fusion like chimichurri popcorn shrimp and mango-dusted fries; Original Rainbow Cone will keep everyone cool with its multiscoop waffle cones; Parrot Cage Restaurant will have turkey meatloaf cupcakes; and local fave Garrett Popcorn will hawk Popcornsicles, popcorn balls made of the shop's cheese and caramel corn on a stick that's flash-frozen.

The Taste runs through July 3 at Grant Park. Admission is free, though you have to pay up for food. Prices for "taste" portions cost $2 or less.
