The best part is that you won't even have to fight the crowds to devour this amazingly rich brunch meal. While San Diego teems with more well-known brunch spots, Babycakes gets overlooked. Mostly it's because it suffers from an identity crisis. It's known for its glass case full of cupcakes in yummy flavors like tres leches and guava mango, though it also moonlights as a bar and cafe. The brunch, available Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., gets lost in the fray. Most people don't even realize the spot serves food other than cupcakes.
If for some unexplainable reason red velvet pancakes don't sound heavenly to you, the restaurant serves up other dishes. You can try a more traditional San Diego brunch dish, like the Mexi Omelet stuffed with pork chorizo with salsa verde, black beans and rice, and either corn or flour tortillas. Or you can be healthy and go for the Skinny Bitch, egg whites sautéed with bell peppers, onions and tomatoes served alongside rosemary potatoes, fresh fruit, and either toast or an English muffin. But we guarantee if you order the Skinny Bitch, you'll be feeling even more bitchy when you see your friend gorge on those beautiful red pancakes.
