Tables at Nightwood in Chicago's Pilsen neighborhood fill up quickly for Sunday brunch, but the best thing on the menu isn't even an entree. When you taste the rich, heart-attack-inducing bacon-butterscotch doughnut, you may want to order another one and ask for the check.

The savory-sweet treat is a must when heading here for brunch. But you'll also want to give the rest of the menu a try, after all Nightwood comes from the same folks who helm Chicago foodie cult favorite Lula Cafe.

The restaurant offers a warm, sophisticated-looking dining room with big-picture windows, brick walls, an open kitchen and hardwood floors. The brunch menu changes week to week—don't worry, those doughnuts are staples—to make use of fresh, seasonal ingredients from local producers. If the popular chicken and waffles is among the offerings, snag them. Unlike a lot of other joints that serve the dish, the chicken is crispy, not greasy.

You'll also be able to find creative comfort food like bread pudding with proscuitto, mozzarella, almonds and honey; an asparagus, bacon and Gruyere quiche; or a griddled poundcake with cream cheese. There are usually some more lunch-oriented items on the menu, but stick to the breakfast dishes for the most soul-satisfying meals. But don't leave without ordering that doughnut.
