Five Awesome Cinco de Mayo Celebrations Around San Diego

It's May 4 already. Have you made your Cinco de Mayo plans yet? Thursday is going to be crazy, as in crazy fun and crazy tasty and crazy awesome, so long as you know where to go to properly celebrate. Obviously some of the US' big cities will have a range of public parties happening, so here's a few to consider if you're in or around...

San Diego

· Since it's so close to the Mexican border, San Diego is teeming with Mexican culture. But you'll find the heart of it in Barrio Logan. The artistic neighborhood, which sits near the foot of the Coronado Bridge, is best known for the colorful, statement-making murals in Chicano Park. Of course, you'll also find loads of taquerias and bars where you can usher in Cinco de Mayo.

· If you want to chow down this holiday, show off your taco-eating skills at the TNT Cantina Taco Challenge at hopping True North Tavern. The person who shoves the most tacos in his gullet will get his mug shot on the bar's Wall of Flame. Those who want to avoid indigestion can opt for specials like $2 tacos, $3 Dos XX, and $4 Espolon tequila margaritas and shots.

· Zonkey Fest at El Camino's Little Italy location will be a crazy celebration. You can tell because the host is the titular zonkey, a small pony that looks like a donkey and is painted with zebra stripes. The party will also feature the restaurant's popular Mexican cuisine, as well as a slew of DJs and salsa-dancing girls.

· If you translate Cinco de Mayo to "drink till you get stupid," join the Gas Lamp District Pub Crawl. The drunkfest will visit 14 bars, including the Fleetwood, East Village Tavern & Bowl and Rock Bottom Brewery. You can pick and choose where you drink, though all spots will offer $2 beers, $4 tequila shots and $5 margaritas. Pick up $10 tickets on the day of the event.

· Old Town is a historical Mexican nabe that draws in lots of tourists. For authentic eats, head there for enchiladas, burritos and SD's famous fish tacos at Casa Guadalajara. For the 5th, the restaurant will pull out all of the stops, with a mariachi band and folklorico dancers. Don't worry, you'll still be able to get copious amounts of alcohol; it carries more than 50 different tequilas and serves up a mean mango margarita.
