'The Hangover 2' May Already Be Hurting Thailand Tourism

The Hangover 2 just hit theaters and its already expected to be one of the biggest movies of the summer, if not the plain biggest. That means there will be millions of people getting an up-close look at Bangkok, where the movie was filmed, but will they leave with a good impression of the city?

So far, word of mouth on Twitter hasn't painted a very positive picture of Bangkok. Yesterday, @KassidyCook1 tweeted, "Hangover 2 was hilarious. Note to self: never go to Bangkok...", while @TayWhosthatsLS wrote, "Staying away from Bangkok Thailand Lol for many reasons thanks Hangover 2".

It's not all bad though, @bc_1188 thought Bangkok might make the perfect Spring Break destination. "Hangover 2 was awesome. Booking Spring Break '12 in Bangkok..." But that might not be the crowd the Tourism Authority of Thailand hopes to attract.

While promoting the movie, the cast hasn't made the city sound very appealing either. When asked about his time in Thailand, Ed Helms said, "Severe food poisoning the first week...Let’s just say my body exploded." But that's nothing compared to what his co-star Justin Bartha said recently. He told a reporter, “I saw some dirty sh*t in Thailand that got burned into my eyes. I honestly can't say what because it is so disgusting I feel ashamed for going. I shouldn't have gone.” Ouch.

Robert Ebert might have summed up it up best his review when he noted,"...let it be said that much of "The Hangover, Part II" plays like an anti-travelogue paid for by a rival tourist destination — Singapore, maybe." Oooh...burn!

Bankok hangover

The local government probably thought it was getting some free publicity, makes the case for verifying before allowing them to film!
