Right now the place is part of the National Park Service, and is protected as part of the larger Gateway National Recreation Area. That means birds and critters are welcome to do their thing here without the fear of airplanes or other things screwing up their habitat and hangout spots. So if things were to move forward in the future there’s probably going to be some kind of battle to protect some kind of bug or bird that has chosen this area as the only place to raise its young.
Unfortunately, the former naval base will likely remain as is, since the consensus says this is just too large of an undertaking. Nonetheless, prime real estate in New York—especially a spot where airplanes could come and go—is at a premium. Only time will tell if we’ll be checking out airport dining locations at the place’s grand opening in 2020 or beyond.
