Will We Soon Be Watching In-Flight Movies in 3D?
So next year around the 100th Anniversary of the Titanic sinking, James Cameron will release a 3D version of the Titanic movie, which you may be able to watch on your next flight. That's right; airlines are considering installing 3D TVs in their planes, so says Hollywood Reporter. And no, watching these movies will not require you to wear glasses.
We've long been advocates of personal in-flight entertainment on planes, whether it's in-flight WiFi or live satellite TV channels, but 3D movies may be taking it a step too far. Nobody wants to see Eat, Pray, Love in 3D, and we're not sure how Kate Winslet's boobs is 3D will make passengers feel (actually, we can guess how it'll make some of them feel).
Apparently car manufacturers are also very interested in the technology, as they should be. Pimp My Ride can only install so many neon-trimmed HD video screens in headrests before it gets boring. 3D is the next logical step; it's safe to say we're over BlueRay players in dashboards now.
Regardless, our cynicism prevails. The airlines supposedly interested in 3D screens haven't been named, the technology is likely two years out, and NY Mag wraps up the whole issue quite nicely:
We were all ready to call this "a potential lawsuit" and "a dangerous and/or scary idea," but, eh, whatever distracts us from our fear of flying is fine by us. Just pass us the Xanax while we zone out on Tron: Legacy again.
