Chuck Schumer—he’s the senior Senator from New York—introduced some new government stuff that would prevent rental car companies from handing out cars affected by recalls. He’s kind of pissed that this isn’t already something that is being done, as he admitted the lack of a policy or law on the books “boggles the mind.”
There’s current laws that prevent dealers from selling recalled cars—until they’re fixed of course—but the rules don’t extend to the rental car lot. You’d think it wouldn’t be that big of a deal, but apparently there have some pretty bad accidents including some fatalities. We don’t want to be total downers, so we’ll just leave it at that.
Things don’t change overnight, so you still might want to pay attention if you are grabbing a rental car anytime soon. Some suggest asking the folks at the counter whether your car is subject to an outstanding recall, and if it is, it might be worth walking 500-feet to check out what another company is offering up.
