Shoppers, Get Ready to Charge: Chicago to Hold Dubai-Like Shopping Festival

Chicago wants to copy the famous month-long Dubai Shopping Festival like a knock-off Prada bag. The Windy City plans on trying to lure shoppers from all over for its own shopping extravaganza.

The Magnificent Mile Shopping Festival won't be as grand as Dubai's; the world's most popular shopping fest draws more than 3 million shopaholics each year. Chicago's first-time event will be on a much smaller scale, only running for two weeks in the summer.

That's not to say that you big spenders won't want to drop cash at Chicago's version. The city's Magnificent Mile is a great shopping corridor with plenty of high-end stores to anchor the fest. The first announced celeb is Carson Kressley, who will kick off the festivities August 26.

Plus, Michigan Avenue-area hotels, shops and restaurants will offer celebrity chefs, trunk shows, designer events and street performances, the Chicago Tribune reported. Organizers also plan to work with shopping tour operators overseas to really bring in the tourism bucks. And like the Dubai fest, Chicago will have raffles with crazy-expensive prizes, like a five-day stay at the Fairmont Chicago Millennium Park hotel's presidential suite, which retails for $20,000. We're sure our credit cards will get plenty of use during the Mag Mile fest.
