The USA's Next Maple Syrup Festival Will Happen in...Indiana?

February 24, 2011 at 2:04 PM | by | Comments (8)

You may think of maple syrup as a fall comfort food staple to drizzle on pancakes, but maple-sugaring season is now. Celebrate the nectar of the season at the National Maple Syrup Festival, the "first and only National Maple Syrup Festival in America" dedicated to the gooey goodness.

Surprisingly, the fest, set for March 5 to 6 and 12 to 13, isn't in Vermont. It goes down in Medora, Indiana, a small town about 80 miles north of Louisville. Producers from syrup-making states all over the country attend to showcase their tasty product. It has some seemingly unrelated events to look forward to, like a man-eating chicken (wha?) and chainsaw-carving demonstrations. But we want to go for the sweet stuff. And it offers plenty, dishing out more than 6,000 flapjacks with 100 percent pure maple syrup—none of that imitation Aunt Jemima stuff—and maple-barbecue pork chops with maple baked beans.

After getting hopped up on syrup, learn how it's made on a guided tour of a sugar-bush farm, where you'll be educated on the process, from sap collecting to syrup processing. There's also a National Maple Syrup Taste-Off for syrup-makers and the Sweet Victory Challenge, for amateur cooks and bakers to try out their best maple-syrup-heavy recipes.

If you want to head out to Southern Indian to check out the sticky offerings, tickets cost $10 and $6 for kiddies.

"Only" Maple Festival?

Either you use a unique definition of "only", or you need to get a better fact-checker. http://www.vtmaplefestival.org/

Only Maple Fest??

I think not. You should have checked your facts befoe posting this one! http://www.vtmaplefestival.org/

Vermont Maple Festival

One wonders if the author got bad information. I Googled Maple festival and Ours in Vermont came up first. But I found close to a dozen others on the first past of many results. I am sure that that 50,000 annual attendees that come to the Vermont Maple Festival each year will be happy to attest to the fact that it exists. With events ranging from a fiddlers contest, to the Maple dinner, talent show, baking/cooking contest and parade, we have been having a lot of fun for the last 45 years!

Vermont Maple Festival the BEST!

Vermont has been hosting a Maple Festival for over 40 years and it is an awesome culinary taste treat. Indiana may have one as well, fine, Vermont's Maple Syrup is so good, we ship it to Denver every year. Haven't found any to top the taste nor quality. We look forward to traveling back to VT some spring to participate in the home town festival that ROCKS!

Google???

Go to Google.com, type Maple Festival. You'll see the one in St. Albans, one in Ohio, Virginia, Pennsylvania, New York, Connecticut, more Vermont, New Hampshire...

Dear Vermont

Whoa whoa--we didn't mean to offend Vermont here. The Indiana Festival bills itself as the "first and only National Maple Syrup Festival in America." We suppose there's something in the "National" part that makes it unique. Perhaps VTers should picket this Indiana Fest?

Only fest dedicated to maple? Well, no, Jennifer.

Indiana *may* be the only location in the US this year for a multi-state gathering, but it is certainly not hosting the 'only fest'. The Vermont Maple Festival in St. Albans Vermont, mentioned by other posters, is just one of the many maple festivals scheduled in Vermont this year. St. Johnsbury, Rupert, Whitingham, Lunenburg, and Norwich are some of the other locations where festivals will be held. Many sugar makers host their own open houses, as well. Not sure we have any man eating chickens in Vermont, though. It's usually the other way around here.
