Can't Afford a Birkin Bag? See One Being Made at Least, During Hermès' Festival

Thanks to that classic episode of Sex in the City, many people know about the highly coveted and high-priced Hermès Birkin bag. But even before the days of Sarah Jessica Parker and gang flitzing about the city, the fashion set already knew that Hermès was the way to go for luxury accessories;it's one of the very, very few fashion houses still producing items the way they've always been, in the factories and by the hands of the craftsmen who've always done it. The Hermès way of crafting each item is now, however, hitting the road in an exhibition called "The Festival of Crafts."

No need to fly to Paris to see this either, as the Festival opens in Seattle on February 23, lasting for only a week before continuing on to Chicago from March 11 to March 16 and Washington D.C. from March 25 to March 30.

Is this a clever way to hide a pop-up Hermès shop, by calling it an exhibit? Nope—the art behind the event is real, and it sounds completely engrossing, according to Luxist:

Attendees will have the opportunity to meet today's Hermès' craftsmen and artisans and learn a specific technique of his or her highly-skilled trade in an interactive environment. The skills on display include the leather making of a bag, silk printing, saddle making, silk engraving, tie making, watchmaking, setting diamond jewelry, making shirts and making gloves.

To see more information on next week's Seattle event, go here and then start digging to find and air out your mom's or grandmother's vintage Hermès scarf for the occasion.
