To celebrate the opening of their new Art of the Americas Wing, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston is presenting a new film series that includes movies set in cities throughout the Americas.

The 10-film series, “Cinema and the City,’’ kicks off this week with a screening of the filmed-in-San Francisco movie "Vertigo." It is intended to examine different ways in which North American cities have been represented in film.

The series will also feature films shot in Mexico City (“Los Olvidados’’), Rio de Janeiro (“City of God’’), San Francisco (“Vertigo’’), Los Angeles (“Chinatown’’), New York (“Taxi Driver,’’ “On the Town.,’’ “Do the Right Thing,’’ and three shorts by Rudy Burckhardt), Washington D.C. (“All the President’s Men’’), and, of course, Boston (“The Friends of Eddie Coyle’’).

Cinema and the City begins Thursday, Feb. 3 at MFA. Tickets are $6 for members and $7 for nonmembers and can be purchased online.
