'War Horse' Conquers the Movies, Broadway, Libraries, and Now a Small UK Town

With a movie version currently in theaters, a Tony Award-winning play on Broadway, a novel on the best-sellers list and a past SNL parody, War Horse has completely invaded pop culture. But, it has also offered an opportunity to find travel inspiration in all of its various incarnations.

While War Horse (the movie) was filmed at several locations throughout the U.K., including Devon where it is set, none of the movie's locations is more picturesque than the village of Castle Combe in Chippenham. The small village was shut down last fall while Steven Spielberg filmed scenes for the movie outside the Cotswold homes that line its streets.

The best way to see Castle Combe is on foot. A free waking tour of the village can be downloaded HERE. The tour takes about 2.5 hours and covers most of the river valley and village streets.

War Horse is still a hit on the stage both in New York and London, where puppets help tell the story of young Albert and his beloved horse Joey. In NYC, the play is performed 8 times a week at Lincoln Center Theater's Vivian Beaumont, 150 West 65th Street. Ticket prices start at $112 and can be purchased online at http://theater-nyc.com. In London, the show is currently showing at the National Theatre where tickets start at £25, but are sold out through February. To book tickets for the London show, visit ticketing.nationaltheatre.org.uk.

And, with most kids home from school this week local libraries across the country have special events planned, including readings and discussions of the novel War Horse, written by Michael Morpurgo. One such event is taking place on Thursday at the Fanwood, NJ Memorial Library and will include pizza for lunch and a lesson in making shadow puppets. To find a library near you, visit USA.gov.
