Cameron Crowe’s We Bought A Zoo, starring Matt Damon, Scarlett Johansson, and Thomas Haden Church, hits theaters today and is based on the true story of a father who moves his two children to a dilapidated zoo which they restore to its former glory.

The movie is set in the U.S. and was filmed just outside of Los Angeles, but the real-life zoo the story is based on is actually located in Devon, U.K. The Dartmoor Zoo is now the thriving home of dozens of animals including monkeys, reindeer, cheetahs and goats. The zoo also hosts special events, like photography tours, family days, and weddings.

Dartmoor Zoo was also recently named the winner of Eden Channel's Top Wildlife Attraction of the Year 2011 thanks to the hard work they have put into the property over the last few years. About the award, the zoo's owner, Benjamin Mee, said:

It was a fantastic boost for the team here. We all work incredibly hard to ensure that the visitor experience is the best it can possibly be. The results of the Eden vote show that for an increasingly large number of visitors, this is precisely what we’ve achieved.

Dartmoor is open to the public every day of the year. Their summer (April to November) hours are 10am – 6pm and winter (November to April) hours are 10am – 4pm. Adult tickets cost £10.95, Children get in for £8.95. For more information about the zoo, visit www.dartmoorzoo.org.
