Chicago's Other, Other Airport is About to Get Busy

December 19, 2011 at 10:30 AM | by | Comments (2)

It’s not even Friday, and we’re already excited about some new routes. Mokulele Airlines usually does their thing flying back and forth between different Hawaiian Islands, but if all goes well they’ll soon be flying all the way to the greater Chicagoland—and beyond.

Right now the plan kind of hinges on a decision from Uncle Sam and his buddies at the FAA, but the plan would have Mokulele Airlines arrive at Chicago-Rockford International Airport (not O'Hare and not Midway) as early as March. The flights would be operated as a charter through the airlines’ Mokulele Tours group, as some chilly citizens would be whisked all the way to Honolulu through nonstop flights.

Even more exciting than Hawaii—and that’s hard to beat—is that there are plans to provide nonstop flights to London’s Stansted Airport as well. Sure it’s not as centrally located as Heathrow or Gatwick, but there’s trains and buses to get you to Big Ben before you can say fish and chips. Decisions regarding the new flights along with the ability to start booking up some vacation packages could come as soon as this week.

For those that need a little warmth before the new year, they're already nearly set to fly to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. Through a partnership with Apple Vacations, flights from Rockford to the DR begin on Christmas Eve. We’ll keep you posted on all the news in and out of RFD, as 2012 looks to be quite the year for new routes to some pretty decent spots.

Misnaming Rockford

Rockford is 85 miles from Chicago, which is not so nearby. Calling it Rockford Chicago only supports the myth that they are connected. Milwaukee is also 85 miles away. We should probably have it renamed Milwaukee Chicago. Ah, the absurdity of airport names (which I have written about): http://www.globalpostmark.com/2011/06/chicago-rockford-airport/

oh, totally

Oh totally agree with you. It's like when SkyBus was operating and trying to pass off Biloxi as New Orleans (77mi away) and Portsmouth as Boston (63mi away). Rockford actually calls itself Chicago Rockford International. HA.
