Today We Learn Even More About Scoot, Asia's Next Budget Airline

So not too long ago—like yesterday—we were chatting about Singapore Airline’s newest offshoot that will be known as Scoot. Well today we got a little more information about the carrier, thanks to a tip from our buddy Will Horton over at the Wings Down Under blog—thanks again!

As you can see above, a rendering of the new paint job is already kicking around, and we have to say that it’s kind of cute. For a major carrier we’d probably have some reservations, but for a low-cost carrier it looks just right. As far as routes are concerned it sounds like the new airline will be doing its best to help out the big brother over at Singapore Airlines, and it won’t really be competing or going head-to-head on any existing routes.

Scoot is shooting for at least four routes to kick off the airline’s operations when 2012 rolls around, and like we said earlier this week, Scoot should at least do its thing to China and Australia. Many details are still pending, but you know we’ll be all over it when the official new route announcements are revealed.

Even though the airline should cost less than other carriers there will be some room for luxury, as they are planning between 32 and 40 seats in the plane’s premium cabin. The rumor is that these will just be recliners in a two-four-two configuration, so the hope of lie-flat low-cost carrier seats are still just a pipe dream—sorry!

In the back of the bus it’s likely going to be a three-four-three configuration, and that’s a little bit more of a squeeze than the current setup on some of Singapore Airlines’ existing Boeing 777s. As far as in-flight entertainment is concerned—they’re working on it—but it might be some sort of new wireless-based tech to get you linked in from the comfort of your seat. The only downer is that the technology that they’re planning might not be ready in time, so there’s the potential for the new carrier to be launched without in-flight games, movies, or other fun distractions.

So far so good as far as we’re concerned, and we can’t wait to hear more and more about the airline’s “Scootitude.”
