'Cat Awareness Day' Declared at JFK to Find Tabby Lost by American Airlines

Where: JFK International Airport [map], New York, NY, United States
October 24, 2011 at 12:44 PM | by | Comments (7)

Early in September, American Airlines hired a pet detective. While that sounds hilarious, the reason for the new hire is decidedly not; American accidentally lost a cat traveling with a passenger at New York's JFK Airport back in August (the cat's cage door came open). Since then, airport staff have been keeping their eyes open for the orange tabby cat, even putting food and water out in the cargo area, where Jack would most likely be hiding out.

Alas, no hide nor hair has been seen of the kitty, but there's no giving up. Instead, this last Saturday AA [Edit: Friends of Jack] organized Jack the Cat Awareness Day, where a search party of volunteers made the issue of the missing cat known around the airport. They passed out flyers to travelers and probably looked under every row of SmarteCarts. Alas, no dice.

This upcoming Saturday will be another Jack Awareness Day, and if they're not successful, who knows how the search will progress.

As bad as the situation has become, cat lovers can take comfort in knowing this isn't the first time a cat has gone rogue at JFK. A baggage manager for AA told the cat's owner that, "the last time this happened, it took about a month to find the cat." So at least they located that one!

We'll actually be traveling through JFK this upcoming Saturday Caturday Jack Awareness Day, so you can bet we'll be saying "here, kitty kitty" near the sushi bar at Deep Blue.

We hope to high heaven Jack is found, not only so that he can be confirmed safe and returned to his owners, but also because we desperately want this to become the children's storybook it's meant to be. Just think! The lesson learned: if you run away, you'll be dearly missed and possibly confronted by scary things (like forklifts!), so don't run away and instead enjoy some warm milk.

"Cat Awareness Day"

I am very surprised that 16 people have "liked" this article for Facebook. They must not know the true story of how Jack went missing. The attitude of this article I find very disrespectful. I just cannot have a sense of humor about the distress of someone who's lost a pet or about the pet in such circumstances. The idea that Jack is on some kind of lark because he didn't care for being caged in a noisy area filled with foreign sights and scents is insensitive and ignorant of what an animal experiences in such circumstances. The author seems to be under the mistaken impression that American Airlines has done an honorable and thorough job handling this situation. And later belittles the efforts of FoJs. This article gets no thumbs up from me. Robin Cordray

Cat Awareness Day article revisited

Of course, I'm a Gemini which means I can often be of two minds. If I have misunderstood this article's attitude I retract my first set of comments.

Who Wrote This??

There seem to be some discrepancies or some attempt to release American Airlines from their responsibilities or to make light of what is a heartbreaking issue in this article. "Accidentally": while I doubt that the baggage handler stacked the cat crates intending to lose a cat, a better word would be "carelessly". The pet detective was hired at the owner's insistence, well after the cat was "lost". Don't give AA credit for this one. Do you have any proof at all that food and water is continuing to be placed anywhere around Term 8 where Jack was lost? AA's last update was on 09/09/11. Not taking any "comfort" at all in knowing that a) this has happened MORE THAN ONCE BEFORE and b) that it took a month to find a previous cat. No, "comfort" does not describe my feelings at all. Would it describe YOUR FEELINGS if you were writing about YOUR missing pet?? The "lesson learned" is a bitter, painful one: don't put anything of value in the care of airlines. I desperately want this "story" to have a happy ending. So do nearly 16K Jack supporters from around the WORLD.

Not you, Robin

You didn't misunderstand, Robin. The article's author may be suffering from some missing understanding, though.

Confused

I don't understand the purpose of this article. It is not informative. Is this a news site?

CORRECTION

FOJ organized the" Jack the cat is lost in AA baggage at JFK" day. American Airlines has been slow to react and communicate with the owner. Quite frankly their overall attitude has been blase. Also the circumstances around Jack getting "lost" have been blurred here. There were 2 cats, 2 carriers. Jack's carrier was stacked on top of another carrier and put on a conveyor for loading. Jacks carrier slipped off the bottom carrier, hit the ground which caused the carrier to break open and Jack escaped. There are 2 sides to every story. The author must not have spoken to the owner or people close to her.

Please read the article before posting comments. No credit has been given to AA, and Friends of Jack is now linked. There's no need to go into every single detail as reader curious for more information can easily visit the Facebook to read all that. Thanks.
