The premium check-in is actually rather foxy-looking, and right by the separate premium security channel, so if you’re flying Club Europe or World, it’ll be an incredibly easy, and even sexy, journey through to departures.

Half the area was boarded up when we went through, so we’re not sure what was behind the hoardings (extra check-in desks?) but as it was, we were really impressed; it's awesome stuff, and a huge upgrade for Gatwick. It’s up there for ease with Heathrow’s T5, and they’ve even jazzed up the outside entrance, where you come in from the shuttle.

Speaking of the shuttle, that’s a drawback of being in the North Terminal; public transport arrives at the South, after which there’s a walk and a shuttle to the North, meaning you have to add about 10-15 minutes onto your transfer time.

But our only criticism was that the woman at bag drop had the typical BA stony-faced sour look that we’ve come to know and dread from British Airways staff. Other than asking for our passports, she didn’t actually speak a word to us throughout the check-in process until we asked her a question, as we left. Not so jolly.

Come on BA, let’s make those “To fly, to serve” posters you’ve stuck all over Gatwick actually sound like you mean it.
