At one point or another, it seems like every major airline becomes interested in offering up a low cost carrier. Airlines in the nifty fifty already had their opportunity to do so—think Ted and Song—but now it seems like the big international carriers want to make things a little more affordable. The latest airline to do so is Air France, but don’t expect cheap flights from Paris to New York anytime soon.

Air France-KLM wants to create a cheap option for domestic flights to face competition from much more affordable carriers like Ryanair and easyJet. The airline would be known as Air France Express—they could have done better—and it would be set up next year with bases in Marseille, Nice, and Toulouse.

The suits at Air France-KLM already operate the budget carrier Transavia.com, but this airline does most of its flying in and out of Amsterdam. We’re not really sure how the new Air France Express will handle any possible overlapping routes, but we’ll just assume they know what they’re doing.

For now it seems like everything is pretty much still on the drawing board, so things can change before the first flights. There’s still all kinds of behind the scenes work to be done,z including all that technical stuff involving union contracts and negotiations. In the meantime we hope they choose a more clever name, and that they give us something to look forward to. We’re big fans of one-way fares starting at just €10—we’ll see!
