Where to Wear White After Labor Day

September 7, 2010 at 9:31 AM | by | Comments (0)

Why can't we wear white after Labor Day? The short explanation is that it goes back to the old days when we didn't have air conditioning but we did have class struggles. White not only keeps you cool, but it signifies status. After Labor Day, one typically transitioned to darker colors to adjust to the cooling temperatures and also to say that the vacation is over and the work must begin again.

Phooey! You can wear white after Labor Day, and we're taking it as a great excuse for a trip to one of these three excellent destinations for wearing white:

· On a Star Clippers tall ship cruise around the Med
Through the end of this month and all of October, the Star Clippers will be unfurling their massive sails over the blue waters of the Mediterranean, taking those clad in their crispest white linens between ports like Patmos, Greece and Bonifacio, Corsica. A 5-night cruise starts around $1,500 per person, but we'd go for a 7-night as an excuse to wring the last few days out of our summer ensembles. In November through the winter, the ships move to the Caribbean.

· Palm Springs, California
It may be September, but Palm Springs is still staring up at a bright summer sun and daily temperatures of 105-103 degrees. It may be a dry heat, but wearing white can still help keep you cool, plus the Palm Springs retro-modern vibe totally goes with white capri pants. Temps won't dip below the high 70s until around the end of November, so you're good to go for a while yet.

· Jeju Island, South Korea
Aside from the fact that South Korea doesn't have Labor Day and thus wouldn't get the "no white after Labor Day rule," Jeju Island is an exotic destination popular with honeymooners. Wearing white, a symbol of virginity, isn't uncommon, but then you'll also see many tourist couples on the island wearing matching outfits. It's a romantic, newlywed thing in Korea, and Jeju is the place to take it to the max.
