The mooncake is an acquired taste, and some may not find the description appetizing—thick, rich pastries filled with lotus seed and salted duck egg yolk, as well as other varieties like red bean paste—but it's a tasty treat. And it's like the Thanksgiving turkey equivalent for the Chinese festival.
Before you begin munching on mooncakes, you can head to L.A.'s free event to get dinner from local food trucks stationed in the area. LA Craft Experience, a market where artists, crafters and designers sell their wares, will also be set up. The Shaolin Warriors of Chinatown will perform, and Chinese acrobats will get all pretzel-like. And if you're still kind of hesitant to try the signature treats, Phoenix Bakery will offer a demonstration on how to make mooncakes.
