Our Top Three 'Picks' for Apple Festivals This Fall

The mornings are getting a little cooler in our neck of the woods, so our thoughts are naturally turning away from the last hurrahs of summer and onto the events of the autumn. In our minds there’s no better way to celebrate fall than with apples, so here’s our “picks” for three festivals dedicated to one of the country’s favorite fruits:

· The National Apple Harvest Festival:
Right in the heart of Pennsylvania apple country sits Arendtsville, and the town welcomes all apple lovers during the first two weekends of October. There are arts and crafts, antique autos, and plenty of live music. Around 25,000 people hit the festival each day in search of apple jellies, apple pancakes, as well as a shot at glory in the pie eating and apple bobbing contests. Admission is $9 for the big kids, and the real kids are free.

· Grand Rapids Apple Butter Festival:
Sometimes we want our apples a little more processed than just what nature offers right off the tree, and that’s why we put Ohio on our list. Slather apple butter on all that you want, as no one here will judge you. There’s apple dumplings and apple everything else, but local restaurants bring more than just apples; bet on stuff like brick oven pizza and homemade cinnamon ice ream just in case you want to try something different. Once you’ve had your fill of the apple entertainment make your way over to the Village Park where you can see people keeping the traditions of yesteryear alive in the Civil War and Frontier Encampments. This year’s festival is set for Sunday, October 10, and an $8 parking fee will get you access to more than 2,800 pints of apple butter fresh from the copper kettles.

· LaFayette Apple Festival:
On October 9 and 10 the leaves on the tree just outside of Syracuse, NY should be doing their thing, so there’s no better time or place to take in the flavors of the fall. Admission here is just $4, and you’ll be overdoing it on apple products before you can say Johnny Appleseed. Just make sure that you eat too many apple cider donuts or apple turnovers, as there’s an Apple Run on Sunday morning. Along with the midway we’re pretty excited to witness the Scarecrow contest. Feel free to dress up your own, as winners can score $50 in prize money—and that’s a lot of apples.
