You can thank the United-Continental merger for Southwest's big opportunity. Continental won't be needing all those slots they have at Newark as the airport's biggest carrier once United throws theirs into the mix as well.

It was only a year plus two months ago that Southwest Airlines first rolled into one of the big three New York City Airports, buying 14 slots for flights at LaGuardia Airport from bankrupt ATA Airlines (RIP). But now, the low-coast airline is bracing for a huge landing at Newark Liberty International via a nice little agreement with Continental to take over 36 of their slots at their busy airport for about 18 daily flights.
Southwest plans to bring their red-bellied planes into EWR as soon as March 2011, and although no route decisions have been made, we think it's safe to say that there'll be a Texas city in there, probably a Florida one and here's hoping Chicago-Midway as well. But hey, we wouldn't be opposed to some unique routes either. And yes, even though Southwest plays with the big boys at Newark, the airline will bring its low fares along for the ride.
