New Planes for Southwest Airlines Could Mean International Routes

August 23, 2010 at 9:36 AM | by | Comment (1)

One of the secrets to Southwest Airlines’ success is the use of just one type of airplane. Southwest uses Boeing 737 jets exclusively, but they do have a couple different flavors of the planes. This allows them to make quick fixes on the ground when necessary, as many of the parts are interchangeable or at least useable when modified with a little bit of duct tape (kidding!). Now the airline is looking to add a new type of aircraft to their fleet, but don’t worry, it will still be a Boeing 737.

Southwest is eyeing the Boeing 737-800 aircraft, and this is significant as this might allow them to go to some new destinations, especially places outside the continental United States. The planes are larger, allowing more passengers to bring their bags along for free, but they also boast a little bit more range to get to places other than Disney World.

The airline is supposed to decide on what airplanes they want for Christmas around the beginning of December, but until then we’ll be thinking about the possibility of seeing an extended route map. Southwest needs to invest some serious cash to upgrade their computer systems to allow reservations for Mexico, Canada, and the Caribbean, but they are expected to make a decision before 2011. Hopefully Southwest will become the official carrier of Spring Break 2011 before we know it.

737 distance range

Your post says that the new planes have "a bit more range." Not true, they have a bit less range. Here's the chart from Boeing: http://www.boeing.com/commercial/737family/pf/pf_rc_dubai.html Aloha, Jeff http://beatofhawaii.com
