'Piranha 3D' Takes a Bloody Bite Out of Lake Havasu

Piranha 3D, in theaters today, is set on fictional Lake Victoria but was actually filmed in Lake Havasu, which borders Arizona and California.

The movie brings all the cheesiness of old horror movies—think naked chicks, lots of blood, and vicious fish in the water—to a new generation, in 3D. According to one of the movie's co-stars, Kelly Brook, "This movie is probably going to win the record of most dead people — and most blood and most nakedness and most everything."

Of course, all of the piranhas in the movie are fake and there's never been any killer fish loose in Lake Havasu, but apparently some people need a bit more convincing.

When Piranha was filming in Lake Havasu last summer, it was all fun and games (and fake blood), but now that it the movie is about to be released, it seems that the community around Lake Havasu is having second thoughts about their role in the horror flick. According to a recent L.A. Times article, some tourists actually think that there could be piranhas in the water and local businesses are afraid its going to keep visitors away.

“One woman was bringing up to me that the movie was coming out, and she asked—as serious as serious can be—‘Oh, but are there still piranha in the lake?’” recalled Cal Sheehy, general manager of the London Bridge Resort in Lake Havasu.

If you're willing to brave the waters of Lake Havasu this fall, The Nautical Inn in Lake Havasu City is offering a special deal through the month of September, reserve a two night stay, and receive a third night free. Rates start at $209 a night.
