The Good Old Days of United Airlines Included Veal Cutlet

Last week, we revealed the new brand identity and airplane livery for United once their merger with Continental gets under way. Most hated it and one commenter even posited the theory that the lazy rebranding could be to save money on completely repainting the planes.

So today, we dug through the old stack of airline ephemera we have and found a relic of United's past, an economy class menu from looks to be a transcontinental flight in the late 1950s, early 1960s. This menu proudly sports the old, plain United logo along with a photo of one of their vacation destinations reached by United planes: Natural Bridges National Monument Park in Utah. Passengers would be presented with this menu and then they could choose to mail it as well, since it's postcard-ready.

This look at retro air travel provides us with two insights: one, that United has always had a very clean brand and two, that modern air travelers are seriously robbed when it comes to in-flight dining. If we could get a dinner mint and a breaded veal cutlet and a mixed green salad and a slice of Napeleon cake and our choice of beverages included in the ticket, then we'd probably be in first class. As it is these days, we'd consider it a stroke of luck to get both a beverage and a dinner mint on a coast-to-coast flight.

Let us know when they get time travel figured out, okay?
