Although the competition's name has the word "volcano" in it, the race route takes runners past other tourist sites. They'll see Runaway Ghaut, deep ravines that carry rainwater from the mountains to the sea—folklore says one sip from the ghaut will ensure a return to the island; the entrance to Air Studios, where the Rolling Stones, Elton John, Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder all recorded; and of course, the Soufriere Hills Volcano, the island's most famous attraction. The volcano erupted and destroyed the former capital city Plymouth in the mid-1990s.
The entry fee for the half-marathon is $38 ($18.50 for Montserrat locals). If you're not a runner but want an excuse to visit this Caribbean island, there's a non-competitive five-mile Fun Run/Walk that's free to enter. But you don't get any volcanic bling.
