The iPhone App Frequent Travelers Shouldn't Be Without

One of the most iconic images of an airport is the giant boards for arrivals and departures. There is just something so jet set about them, as they inspire you to imagine hopping on the next flight to one of the listed destinations. We admit feeling a special affection for the boards with the numbers that flip.

Now there's an app that seeks to recreate the airport departure and arrival boards on your iPhone (and coming soon to Droid). It's called AirportRemote, and although it's numbers don't flip, they are up-to-the-minute and available for over 100 international airports. Wonder what flight it is that lands at Istanbul's Ataturk Airport at 7:27am? AirportRemote knows, thanks to its use of FlightStats info, that it's Singapore Airlines 490 from Dubai. Via the "share" button, you can forward a screenshot right along to your family or business associates.

The app can be downloaded here from iTunes and it's a pricey $3.99, but it does work for the money.

There are downsides, however. For one, the app only operates in landscape position. Two, you can't make the airline logos any larger than ant-size. But the biggest issue is that nowhere does it say what terminal at the airport the flights depart from. You can view the gate number (when it's assigned), immediate gate changes, baggage claim info and even temperature information at the destination airport, but no terminal numbers.

The above look at the available airports should give a good idea as to the breadth of this app. Heck, we never knew that we were so interested in flights from Guernsey until we started playing with AirportRemote. We highly recommend it for frequent travelers and for anyone who enjoys plane spotting. Squint up at the sky to departing and arriving flights then down at your phone to identify them quickly. To be honest, it beats the other flight tracking apps we've got on our phone.

[Disclosure: AirportRemote gave us a code to play with the app, but all opinions here are our own]
