The Best Airline Credit Cards Promos Right Now

July 27, 2010 at 9:31 AM | by | Comments (2)

Sure credit cards are just one of the things that got the world into a financial mess, but if you know what you’re doing they can also take you on that dream vacation. Bonuses and promotions can pay for your airfare, but don’t charge an infinite amount of umbrella drinks to your hotel room thinking you’re just paying for the next trip. Here’s our picks for some of the best airline credit card promotions going on right now:

· American:
Citibank has teamed up with American to offer three different flavors of credit card. There’s a Visa, MasterCard, and an American Express that will each provide you with 30,000 frequent flyer miles if you’re approved for the card. Cheap domestic award tickets start at just 25,000 miles, and award tickets aren’t too tricky to find on American Airlines with a little flexibility and spending. One catch—you will have to spend $750 in the first four months to get the miles.

· Continental:
Chase offers an OnePass Plus Card where travelers can score 25,000 frequent flyer miles immediately after their very first purchase. The MasterCard also allows an additional 5,000 bonus miles if you add an additional cardholder—looks like Fido is getting a credit card. There’s an annual fee of $85, but it’s waived for the first year. High rollers can get another 10,000 bonus miles for spending $25,000 on the card in a year. With Continental and United teaming up, finding a freebie ticket to somewhere in the US or Canada—excluding Hawaii—shouldn’t be too difficult.

· Delta:
We’ll throw Delta into the mix, but their credit card relationship with American Express isn’t the best for travelers. Just like most of the other legacy airlines they offer 25,000 SkyMiles with a credit card signup, and the first year’s annual fee is waived. However, finding an award ticket for just 25,000 miles is way too difficult right now. If you just want to go somewhere quickly, we’d recommend trying out some of the other airlines first.

· United:
Just like their soon-to-be buddies over at Continental, United Airlines has partnered with Chase to give away frequent flyer miles. The United Mileage Plus Visa Signature Card offers 25,000 bonus miles after your first purchase, and you can score another 5,000 miles by spending at least $250 and signing up another authorized user. Like most of these cards, there is an annual fee—it’s $60—but it’s waived the first year. We don’t know about you, but after we get our bonus we’re thinking about canceling 364 days later.

Alaska Airlines Signature Visa Card

Just received my Alaska Airlines Signature Visa Card. I get 25,000 for signing up and 2 complimentary lounge tickets. Annually, I get a $99 companion ticket and can use it for first class as well as coach. Great deal, considering my annual fee is $75. If I use the companion ticket to book first class, my wife and I are saving at least $500 (minus the $75 annual fee). Also, when I reserve tickets online, I get 3X mileage and 1,000 bonus miles. We live in Hawaii, so having this card compliments our Hawaiian Airlines Visa/mileage card.

Good Pick!

That sounds like a winner, and we should have included it, especially with the bonus of the lounge passes and companion ticket.

It's nice that Alaska is friendly with other carriers as well for better chances at scoring an award ticket.
